How Much Food Can A Hamster Stuff In Its Cheeks?

January 17, 2015 By Sarah Yee 4 Comments

You’ve probably seen your hamster stuffing food into its cheek pouch. If you’ve wondered how much they can put in those cheeks, here’s a BBC video with a Syrian hamster stuffing its pouch full of dried nuts and fruit. But it’s not just a random nom-noming video, at about 40 seconds into the video, you can see an X-ray of the hamster stuffing that food all the way to the side of his hips

It turns out a Syrian’s cheek pouches extends all the way to the hips and that’s how they’re able to pack so much away.

Here’s another video of one pouching way too many carrots:

Dwarf hamsters can do it but obviously due to their size difference, they won’t be able to get as much in. Here’s one of a Russian dwarf hoarding some sunflower seeds:

And this is not quite related but I feel obligated to include a video of Ichigo, my Roborovski hamster cracking open a lot of sunflower seeds he stored in his pouch.

50 Hamster Care Tips & Facts

50 Hamster Care Tips & Facts

Looking for hamster care tips? robohammys and budgiesonline101 have created a very informative video packed with plenty of hamster care tips and facts for hamster owners. Below is Part 1 by robohammys:

Many of the points mentioned in the above video are important things that new hamster owners may not be aware of. For example, pet shops may carry pine, cedar, or scented bedding but these are actually unhealthy  for your pet because they contain harmful chemicals. These chemicals can cause respiratory problems in dwarf hamsters and other small animals.

And here’s part 2 by budgiesonline101

If you’ve enjoyed their videos, be sure to check out there channels here and here.

Short Hamster Videos on Vine

Short Hamster Videos on Vine

I found Vine yesterday and have been recording hamster videos on it. It’s a lot of fun and super easy to make videos of your cute little pets.

What is Vine?

Vine is an app for the iOs that lets you create and upload short videos on the fly. Using the app, all you need to do is press on your screen and hold to record. The recording stops when you release your finger so by pressing and releasing multiple times, you can create stop-motion animations, combine various scenes and so on.

My hamster videos

Here’s one of the videos I uploaded to Vine:

Ichigo is rolling in his new hamster bath tub. He does this digging thing before he rolls so when I saw him start to dig, I whipped out my iPhone and recorded it.

And here’s another hamster video:

I was trying to record Ichigo running on the wheel but he stopped when I took out my phone. You can see Blueberry coming nearer and then running away from the camera.

And finally, this.

You can embed your videos on Vine on your own web site and choose whether to have a white border around it or not:

Apologies for the jerky video, that was my first attempt at recording my hamsters 🙂

Making GIFs with your hamster videos

If you love making short videos of your hamster, I’m sure this will be more convenient than recording and uploading a video to YouTube. You can even convert your videos into gifs.

Here’s what it looks like after I converted one of the clips into an animated gif:

Join me on Vine

I’ll be uploading lots of hamster video clips onto Vine. If you want to see more of them, follow Dwarf Hamster Blog on Vine or just come back to this blog and I’ll figure out a way to put all the Vine videos here automatically soon!

You can get Vine on the iTunes store. Leave a comment too if you’ve made any hamster videos with Vine. I would love to look at your hamster videos! <3

Weird Dwarf Hamster Grooming Behavior

March 20, 2013 By Sarah Yee 1 Comment

Weird Dwarf Hamster Grooming Behavior

While trying to take a video of my dwarf hamster Ichigo sleeping with his belly up, his brother Blueberry started nibbling at him. I’ve seen them groom each other previously but never for so long and never while one of them is asleep. Ichigo looks like he’s having a weird (bad?) dream. The grooming stopped after a while but I continued recording how Ichigo looks in his sleep until he woke up.

Check out the video below:
